The CSI Mission Hospital at Nagercoil was founded by Dr. Thompson in 1880 under
the care of Dr. Y. Henry. The foundations for a new hospital building were laid
on January 9, 1903 and completed by February, 1904. The surgical theater and ward
were opened on November 14, 1938. As the hospital was running at a loss, it had
to be shut down in 1954 and the Out-patient block was let out to YMCA. The hospital
was later revived under Dr. Shiela Thomas in 1964 and continued to function as a
Maternity and Child-care Hospital with Out-patient services for all kinds of patients.
Continued expansion and improvement of the hospital now accommodates a new and spacious
Out-patient block with Emergency department, General and Private wards, Doctors
quarters and Nursing hostel, an Operation theater complex and labour room with a
neonatal care center and a 24-hour Pharmacy. In the future the hospital hopes to
have upgraded to a Multi-specialty center with an adjoining nursing college and
a senior citizens home.
